20.9MP DX-Format CMOS Sensor and EXPEED 5 Image Processor

The DX-format 20.9MP CMOS sensor is coupled with the EXPEED 5 image processor, creating a distinguished blend of heightened sensitivity, nuanced image quality, and rapid overall performance. With a native sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200, this combination allows operation in a diverse range of lighting conditions. It can be expanded further to ISO 50-1640000 (Lo 1 to Hi 5) to tackle even the most challenging situations. The synergy of resolution and sensor size contributes to clean image quality, delivering smooth color transitions and reduced noise across the sensitivity range.

Beyond enhancing image quality, the EXPEED 5 processor imparts remarkable speed to the camera system. This includes a top continuous shooting rate of 8 fps with full-time autofocus and exposure metering. A single burst can capture up to 100 JPEGs or 50 14-bit lossless compressed NEF files.

4K UHD Video Recording

Beyond capturing stills, the D7500 excels in video recording, supporting 4K UHD video at 30, 25, and 24 fps, as well as Full HD/HD recording at up to 60 fps. Movie files can be saved to in-camera memory cards or as uncompressed files, with 4:2:2 sampling, to an optional external recorder via HDMI out. To tailor the look of your movies, three image area options are available:

1. The 4K UHD movie image format provides a 1.5x increase in the effective focal length for 4K 3840 x 2160 recording.
2. The 1.3x-based movie image area offers a 1.3x crop of the DX sensor for recording Full HD and HD video.
3. The DX-based movie image format utilizes the full width of the DX-format sensor, ideal for recording Full HD 1920 x 1080 and HD 1280 x 720 video. This setting is well-suited for shallow depth of field effects and provides the widest field of view.

The camera offers a wide sensitivity range for video recording, ranging from expanded ISO 100-1640000, with manually adjustable sensitivity values through the dedicated movie-shooting menu. A video-optimized Flat Picture Control mode flattens the overall contrast curve for greater control during post-production and color grading.

For handheld shooting, Electronic Vibration Reduction minimizes the appearance of camera shake across three axes during Full HD and HD recording, controlling horizontal, vertical, and rotational movements. Active D-Lighting can also be applied during Full HD/HD shooting to preserve highlight and shadow details in high-contrast situations.

In terms of handling, a dedicated power aperture button (Pv) ensures smooth exposure transitions when moving between light and dark areas. Auto ISO maintains consistent brightness in changing light conditions. Audio recording can be managed using the built-in stereo microphone or an optional external mic via the 3.5mm stereo jack for enhanced control over audio quality. Audio levels are adjustable in 20 increments, and live monitoring is possible through the headphone jack.

Beyond traditional movie recording, the camera supports time-lapse recording for up to 9999 consecutive frames shot over the course of up to one week, with up to 4K UHD/30p output.

51-Point Multi-CAM 3500FX II Autofocus System

The D7500 boasts an adept autofocus system utilizing up to 51 distinct points, with flexibility to choose 9, 21, or all 51 points based on the situation. The AF detection sensitivity extends down to -3 EV, and the array includes 15 cross-type points for enhanced accuracy with centrally-located subjects. Specifically beneficial for telephoto lenses and teleconverters, the center-most point is sensitive down to an aperture value of f/8. The 3D Tracking, an integral part of the intelligent Scene Recognition System, ensures consistent focus on moving subjects, particularly advantageous during high continuous shooting speeds.

Various autofocus modes are available, including Single-point AF, Dynamic-area AF (with selectable 9, 21, or 51 points), 3D-tracking (utilizing all 51 points), and Auto-area AF. Additionally, Group-Area AF treats smaller groups of AF points as a single point, widening the field of recognition, making it suitable for tracking faces or other detailed subjects.

For live view shooting in both stills and movies, a contrast-based AF system is employed for precise focus acquisition. It operates in continuous, full-time servo mode, enhancing performance with moving subjects.

Body Design

Featuring a generous 3.2″ 922k-dot touchscreen, this camera provides an intuitive interface for live view shooting and playback control. The tilting design enhances usability, accommodating shooting from both high and low angles. A bright pentaprism optical viewfinder ensures 100% frame coverage and a 0.94x magnification, delivering clear, realistic viewing in any lighting condition.

Crafted with a monocoque-type carbon-fiber construction, the camera is both lightweight and durable. The design incorporates a deep right-hand grip, ensuring comfortable and stable handling, making it particularly suitable for extended shooting sessions with longer zooms or telephoto lenses. The weather-sealed construction allows for reliable performance in challenging environmental conditions.

The shutter unit undergoes testing for up to 150,000 cycles, ensuring long-lasting use. An integrated shutter monitor calculates the duration between front and rear curtain movements with each exposure, automatically correcting for any variances.

For low-light conditions, a built-in pop-up flash provides additional illumination. The hot shoe allows for the use of an optional external Speedlight, and when used with the optional WR-R10 Wireless Remote Controller, the camera can control up to three groups of SB-5000 Speedlights via radio.

The included EN-EL15a rechargeable lithium-ion battery is CIPA-rated to last for approximately 950 shots per charge, providing ample power for extended shooting sessions.

SnapBridge Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

Facilitating numerous sharing and tagging options, the D7500 is equipped with built-in SnapBridge connectivity for seamless image transfer and remote shooting capabilities. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Wi-Fi enable communication between the camera and a smart device. Moreover, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera, enabling efficient operation from a distance.

Scene Recognition System and Exposure Metering

The sophisticated Scene Recognition System, featuring 3D Color Matrix Metering III, employs a 180k-pixel RGB sensor. This sensor meticulously evaluates and analyzes various elements within a scene, such as brightness, contrast, subject distance, and scene colors. The aim is to swiftly determine an accurate exposure and white balance setting, optimizing the rendering of the current scene. The gathered information is cross-referenced against onboard reference images to guarantee consistency across images. This includes exposure, white balance, i-TTL flash settings, and subject-tracking AF performance, ensuring a uniform and high-quality outcome from image to image.
