The Z9’s core feature is the 45.7MP BSI-equipped FX-format CMOS sensor, which has fast readout speeds and reduces the rolling shutter. Its built-in features also minimize noise and provide impressive clarity when shooting at higher settings. The 45.7MP sensor is ideal for capturing portraits and landscapes, and it can record videos at resolutions up to 8k.

The 45.7MP BSI-equipped sensor is known for its exceptional color rendering capabilities. It has a native ISO range of 64-25600 and can be expanded to 32-102400.

Expeed 7 Processing 

The EXPEED 7 processing engine is also included with the sensor. It provides speeds of up to 10x faster than the Z 7II. In addition to fast AF speeds, this engine helps realize other desirable features such as high burst shooting rates and a huge buffer capacity.

It can shoot at speeds of up to 20 fps continuously when shooting in RAW, 30 fps in JPEG, and 120 fps when shooting with 11MP stills. It also supports full AF/AE performance.

It can buffer up to 1,000 images in a burst and record images for up to 50 seconds continuously. It can also automatically skip the first shot of each burst to speed up the review process on the camera.

One of the most convenient features of the Pre-Release Capture is its ability to automatically capture frames in a burst while the shutter is still half-pressed. This feature allows you to take a quick snapshot of the last few seconds of the shot before the entire frame is pressed.

The electronic shutter allows you to take advantage of the great light performance of the digital camera when working in bright conditions.

The design of the Stacked Sensor allows it to reduce the rolling shutter distortion that occurs when shooting at speeds of up to 1/32,000 sec. This feature ensures that fast-moving objects, such as a baseball bat or a golf club, do not appear distorted.

The new High Efficiency RAW format is designed to maintain the image quality of traditional raw files while reducing the size of the files to fit on the memory card. It can also be used to create an in-camera motion analysis using Motion Blend Retouch. In addition, with the latest version of firmware, the camera has an enhanced long exposure display and a live exposure timer.

Electronic Shutter System

The Z9 uses an electronic shutter system instead of a mechanical one for capturing images. Its built-in speed and stacked structure help minimize motion distortion and provide accurate depictions of fast-moving objects, such as cars and baseball bats. In addition, it supports high-speed sync and flash recording.

The Z9 can operate silently without a mechanical shutter. It features a built-in sound that can be used for awareness when taking photos, and it can be adjusted to fit different working conditions.

8K & 4K Video Recording Capabilities 

The Z9 is the most capable camera from Nikon, with an 8K capable sensor and a variety of frame rates. It can record UHD 8K videos at 30p and has a continuous shooting duration of up to 2 hours.

The Z9 can record 4K videos at up to 120p in slow-motion mode. Oversampled 4K content can be achieved using an 8K area and produce enhanced detail and sharpness. High-quality frame grabs can also be achieved using the camera’s built-in 8K sensor for producing 33MP and 11MP stills. In addition, it can be used with the latest version of the software, Firmware 2.0, to add support for both N-RAW and RAW formats.

A raw recording delivers greater color latitude and tone diversity, which can be beneficial for color grading and post-production requirements.

The N-RAW format is created by Nikon and offers a small file size compared to other raw options. It also has the capability to create MP4 files for easy transfer and preview.

N-RAW files can be created at up to 8.3k, 4.1k, 5.3k, and 3.8k at 60p, 24p, and 120p, respectively. ProRes RAW recordings are also available at these rates.

An internal recording of 10-bit color with 4:2:2 sampling can be made in H.265 and ProRes 422 formats. This can be used for various post-production workflows. In addition, there are various features that can help with color grading, such as a Flat Color profile and a 10-bit NLog setting. Creating content with high-quality HLG files from the camera is also possible.

Subject Detection & More 

The Z9 utilizes a 493-point Phase Detection AF system to realize accurate and fast focusing performance. The system is aided by the Z interface’s high-speed communication, which allows it to send and receive AF readings up to 120 frames per second. In addition, it can be used in low-light conditions to focus in the background and achieve great results in concert and astro photography.

Through a new deep learning algorithm and a new approach to subject detection, automatic subject recognition can now recognize nine different types of subjects, such as humans, animals, and bicycles. It will automatically track and focus these subjects as they move across the frame, ensuring sharp focus. One of the most important improvements that this new technology brings to the table is the ability to recognize the eyes in the scene even if they are small or large.

The new Z9 from Nikon includes a 3D Tracking mode, which pairs with the company’s popular focusing system for capturing fast moving subjects. It also comes with three Dynamic-Area AF modes, which can be used to capture a variety of moving objects.

In addition, the 2.0 firmware introduces 20 unique Wide-Area AF selection modes. These allow you to get the most out of your photos by creating a custom focus pattern for each area of the frame.

Firmware Updates 

The Z9’s Firmware 2.0 was released to enhance the camera’s cinema capabilities. It also included various production-related updates. One of these is a red LED frame indicator that can be used to recognize when the camera is recording.

A Waveform monitor provides a realtime analysis of exposure. It features a dedicated video info display that shows various recording options, including the frame rate, frame size, audio settings, and the codec. The camera’s control panel also displays these settings. In manual mode, the user can adjust the exposure in 1/6 stop increments.

The ability to assign fast AF-ON to different buttons has been made available. It allows you to set two different speeds for shooting at the same time. For instance, you can use slow shutter speed to take advantage of low-light situations or create blurred effects.

The professional body design Real-Live Viewfinder from Professional Body Design features an advanced EVF with a 3.69m dot OLED panel for clear and bright images. Its 2.0 firmware update adds a high-speed mode that improves the image quality and increases the refresh rate to 120 frames per second.

The Z9 is the first digital camera from Nikon that features a 3.2-inch four-axis touchscreen LCD. It can work from both low and high angles regardless of the orientation used. This type of screen allows for easier viewing even when the camera is held vertically or horizontally.

The dual CFexpress Type B slots are durable and feature a tough construction. They allow you to store files with high-speed writing and reading speeds and keep up with 8K video recording and fast continuous shooting. These memory cards are compatible with XQD.
