42.4MP Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor

The DSC-RX1R II boasts a 42.4-megapixel full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor, paired with the BIONZ X image processor, delivering high-resolution photos and videos while efficiently reducing noise and enhancing processing speed. Its sensor architecture, featuring a gapless on-chip lens design and anti-reflection coating, alongside the removal of the optical low-pass filter, significantly enhances light gathering and detail capture. Additionally, the inclusion of a copper wiring layer substantially boosts the speed of data transmission, enabling the production of high-resolution 42.4-megapixel images with sensitivity levels reaching up to ISO 102,400.

Variable Optical Low-Pass Filter

The RX1R II introduces the world’s first adjustable optical low-pass filter, offering photographers the unprecedented ability to fine-tune the level of filtration for each image, optimizing the detail capture from its 42.4-megapixel sensor. This innovative system employs a liquid crystal layer, which adjusts the light-splitting function through the application of varying voltages. Users are presented with three selectable settings: Off, Standard, and High, enabling the RX1R II to adapt to diverse shooting scenarios that would typically necessitate the use of different cameras. Furthermore, the camera features a low-pass filter bracketing mode, providing a convenient means for photographers to directly compare the effects of the various settings.

Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 Lens

The RX1R II comes with an integrated Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 lens, ensuring crisp images with excellent depth-of-field control. Its wide f/2 aperture not only facilitates a shallow depth-of-field for standout subject focus but also enhances image quality in dim lighting. To guarantee superior image clarity, its optical design comprises 8 elements in 7 groups, including three aspherical elements—with one being an advanced aspherical element—to reduce aberrations and distortion effectively. The lens’s nine-blade diaphragm contributes to the high-quality imagery by creating smoothly blurred backgrounds. Additionally, the lens features a specialized macro mode, reducing the minimum focusing distance from 11.8 inches to merely 7.9 inches, allowing for closer and more detailed shots.

Fast Hybrid AF with 399 Phase-Detect Points

Experience rapid and decisive autofocus with the upgraded Fast Hybrid AF system in the RX1R II. This system combines 399 on-sensor phase-detection AF points covering 45% of the frame with 25 contrast-detection AF points, enhancing the autofocus speed, precision, and tracking capabilities. The back-illuminated sensor design enhances readout speeds, enabling effective tracking during continuous shooting at speeds up to 5 fps. This feature is complemented by a continuous AF Display, which shows the active AF points for real-time tracking visibility.

Additionally, the AF system includes a Lock-on AF tracking feature, which leverages more scene information for significantly better accuracy and stability in tracking subjects. For portrait photographers, the Eye AF function is a game-changer, automatically focusing on the subject’s pupil for stunningly sharp portraits, even at wide apertures with shallow depth of field.

Full HD 1080p Video Recording in XAVC S Format

Beyond capturing stunning still images, the RX1R II also excels in video recording, offering superb quality through the use of the XAVC S format. This feature allows for the capture of highly detailed Full HD 1080p footage at a high bit rate of 50 Mbps, with frame rates of up to 60 fps. For those looking to create slow motion effects, the camera supports HD 720p recording at 120 fps. Additionally, the inclusion of a 3.5mm microphone input jack enables users to connect external microphones, significantly enhancing audio recording quality.

3.0″ 1,228.8k-Dot Tilting LCD Monitor

Featuring a high-resolution LCD screen with 1,228.8k dots, this display offers photographers an outstanding platform for framing shots, tweaking settings, and reviewing videos and photos. Its ability to tilt 109° upwards and 41° downwards enables versatile shooting from a variety of angles. Additionally, the screen is engineered to remain visible even in bright sunlight conditions that typically obscure most displays.

Retractable 0.39″ 2.36M-Dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder Electronic Viewfinder

The camera boasts a sophisticated 4-lens optical system, incorporating two glass molded aspherical elements, which powers the high-resolution 0.39-inch 2.36M-dot XGA OLED viewfinder. This viewfinder accurately represents your final image, including the impact of your camera’s settings, ensuring what you see is what you get. It’s conveniently designed to pop up from the camera body for use and can be retracted for compact storage. Users will appreciate the rich tonal variations and enhanced contrast it offers, along with premium features such as 100% frame coverage and a 0.74x magnification, all contributing to a comfortable and precise eye-level framing experience.

Uncompressed 14-Bit RAW Format

Responding to photographers’ feedback, Sony has launched an uncompressed 14-bit RAW format option for those seeking the utmost image quality their camera can produce. This format offers more nuanced tonal transitions, free from the artifacts typically associated with compressed formats.

Physical Controls & Magnesium Alloy Construction

Maintaining its durable magnesium alloy build, the camera’s design and layout have seen thoughtful refinements rather than a total overhaul. Enhancements include the pop-up viewfinder and tilting EVF, as well as an updated design for the camera’s numerous dials and buttons, improving ergonomics and user interaction. The lens continues to offer a physical focusing ring and aperture dial, similar to its predecessor, allowing users the option of precise manual control over their settings for a more tactile shooting experience.

Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity with NFC

The RX1R II comes equipped with built-in Wi-Fi, facilitating seamless image sharing to mobile devices for immediate uploading to social networks, email, and cloud storage platforms. It also features NFC (Near Field Communication), enabling a simple one-touch connection with compatible mobile devices without the need for a complicated setup. Once paired, the connected mobile device can access a live view from the camera and remotely control its shutter.

Additionally, the camera supports PlayMemories Camera Apps via the Wi-Fi connection, allowing users to customize the camera’s capabilities to match their shooting preferences. There are apps designed for a variety of photography styles, including portraits, macro shots, sports, time-lapse, motion shot, and more, enhancing the camera’s versatility and user experience.

A Multi-Interface Shoe located on the top of the camera enables support for a variety of accessories, including remotes, flashes, microphones, and more.
Capture One Express (for Sony) is a free downloadable RAW conversion software that will help users get the utmost quality from their image files.
Precise white balance adjustments for tuning the exact color using amber-blue and green-magenta axes.
Bright Monitoring boosts image brightness by changing shutter speed for better preview of a night sky or dark scene.
ISO Auto Minimum Shutter Speed allows users to prevent image blur by setting a minimum shutter speed that when reached will then start changing the ISO sensitivity.
Thirteen Creative Styles, including Vivid and Portrait, are available for capturing images with pre-defined looks that can flatter specific subject matter.
